I'll be working at the event. It should be a lot of fun.

every time i hear swampoodle, i cringe a bit. i actually love the name and i read somewhere someones suggestion to open a coffeeshop called "swampoodle gounds", which is fucking brilliant. i even advocated a few years ago building "swampoodle arts center" along north capitol. i've got my immigrant irish pride in me too as my great grandparents moved to NYC in the 1800s from Ireland.

but it seems to me that calling the whole neighborhood "swampoodle" simply erases the past 100 years of its mainly african american history in favor of a whiter, past. gentrifications "erasing effect" on african american neighborhoods and history is already a big (and real) concern.why fuel that?

we've got Gonzaga, but not much other history lives in the buildings. its 90% new construction. why not start afresh?

name and all.

just some spare change of a thought. maybe i'm just nuts though.

i understand and hear you on the fact that swampoodle calls the memory back to the irish and leaves aside the history that has happened in between, but i will argue (for argument's sake) that, since almost the entire "neighborhood" was razed, and everything that's happening there is new, it feels like, in this instance, it can't hurt to use the really old name.

of course, very little of that history exists now either, so your point about new name and starting afresh makes perfect sense.

can we just find something better than noma? pretty please?!?
