UPDATED: bloomingdale: we're growing!

literally, bloomingdale is growing. new light post banners have been put up on the south side of rhode island avenue from at least 1st street to 3rd street, nw (if you have seen more, let me know in the comments. i haven't had a chance to check more thoroughly).

the thing is, if you check this wikipedia article (which has been recently updated and greatly expanded by folks in the neighborhood), you'll note that 2nd street nw is the widely-accepted western boundary of the neighborhood. that would put timor just outside of bloomingdale proper (but that's ok, we'll still claim it for our own).

i think most people would agree that the north side of the 200 block of rhode island forms part of the southern end of ledroit park. where does that put the southern side of that block, being just outside of ledroit and bloomingdale? is it part of shaw, truxton circle, or is it a triangular little no-man's land without a strong neighborhood identity?

if that's the case, consider it annexed by bloomingdale. we're taking over!

UPDATE: looks like the banners are on the 1st street commercial strip as well as the unit block of rhode island avenue.

I went on the Bloomingdale neighborhood walk this evening and asked the group leader about the boundaries. Apparently, north of Rhode Island, the western edge is 2nd Street. South of Rhode Island and north of Florida, the boundary is 3rd St. So, it looks like Bloomingdale is a little bigger than we thought!

Those banners do not reflect the heritage of this community!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They should show people of COLOR! Who were here originallly!!

i1stp: i'm willing to bet anything you're a troll. if you'd like to explain yourself a little more clearly, you're welcome to, but your comment makes no sense. there are no people on these banners at all. plus, trees were here before everyone, so they should be complaining about this the most.

It would be funny if the new banners also stated "(for now)" at the bottom =)

fourthandeye: maybe i could deface one.

nah, i'd never do that. and besides, i don't think this blog deserves advertisement! it's not that important! ;)

I suppose I meant that "it's subject to change" much like I believe the origin of your blog name was intended to mean. =)

the fountain statuettes depict caucasian women, which is what the previous poster was flipping out about.

regardless of what the carving in the fountain represents, the point is that the commenter was still trolling. it doesn't matter what they represent. it's a historic fountain that was located in the neighborhood. that makes it completely germane as a symbol of the neighborhood.
